These incipient theatres were the result of the colonial encounter, and the socio-economic, political, and psychological effects this brought in its wake. I have used, with some reservation, the term 'hybrid theatres' to refer to these new theatres as a distinct and a historical phenomenon, of the very practical reason that they combined, in varying degrees of synthesis, different ingredients in their performance styles and repertories.
