Networks, alliances, sharing of resources. We have a lot of time for this.So much of the way we are today is linked to this 'keep-the-doors-ajar-the-windows-open-answer-your-own-phone' instinct that Seagull has followed over all its years of working with diverse individuals and organizations. It is about access. About being available. About ideas, resources, values and about experience gathered over three decades.

Here are a few examples of recent networking:

The Max Mueller Bhavans across the country are a part of our cultural spaces as much or in some ways more than the Lalit Kala Akademis. Accessible and active their libraries have been a part of our growing up. Last September the Calcutta MMB formally announced that they would shut down all their libraries across India by December 2003. Except Delhi. Seagull offered to save the Calcutta one by a) offering the entire first floor of the Seagull Bookstore to house the books; b) shift the music and the films to the Resource Centre across the road; hire and pay for a librarian and his assistant to run the place.

The new Max Mueller Library at Seagull, as it is now called, opened with a series of evenings with German writers and poets on April 1, 2004 and has already got back a substantial number of the earlier members.

The Alliance Française have a space problem ever since their library was forced to shut down after a devastating fire at their old premises. So the Seagull Arts and Media Centre becomes the automatic choice to house their substantial video collection. This is then made readily available for their use and for planning joint or individual programmes as and when requested or needed.

Here's a book that came out of collaborations and networking within the CAFO initiative:
