Research and Documentation Seagull is currently involved in researching and documenting the life and
work of the late Nirode Mazumdar (1916-1982). Mazumdar was a highly original and well respected artist who
stood at a significant juncture in the history of 'modern' art in India, as a
leading practitioner of the post-Bengal School generation. He evolved a style
which straddled several seemingly contradictory strands : 'Indian'
and 'Western', 'traditional' and 'modern', 'symbolic' and 'abstract'. Seagull
feels that his deeply philosophical explorations of the meaning, methods and
language of 'modernity' in the Indian context remain extremely valuable today,
when this vexed question of an 'Indian' identity expressed through an
individually unique style remains as much a central issue in the arts as it
was at his time.
