In Visual Arts Exhibitions: Seagull has successfully attempted to open up prevailing viewing habits and the relationship between the viewer and the exhibition space, by turning 'found' spaces(empty halls, an unused bungalow, abandoned buildings awaiting demolition) into temporary viewing spaces. This exercise of alternate spaces, freed from the structured manner in which works are hung in galleries, allows art to be viewed in more flexible configurations. Lighting, for example, is unconventional, since one can avoid the set lighting pattern of the gallery. Moreover, exhibitions can be extended beyond the week or two necessitated by the economics of a commercial gallery. To be able to visit an exhibition repeatedly over a month or so, as is possible in museums abroad, is a rare opportunity for the art viewer in this country. Seagull has worked closely with artists like Somnath Hore,Reba Hore, the late Meera Mukherjee, K. G. Subramanyan, Manu Parekh, Madhvi Parekh, Chittrovanu Mazumdar. |
