MAHASWETA DEVI The Selected Works [fiction]
These irresistible stories abound with colourful characters- a
non-vegetarian cow, the household pet, who wolfs down fried fish and guzzles spirits;
an irrepressible prankster of a brother and his antics; a father who fills the entire
house with hens and chickens, and others like Chittu, who changes into a pebble or a
mongoose at will.
A tender, charming tale of Mato, a little tribal boy and his pet baby
goat, Arjun, this is, at one level, a story children would enjoy; on the other, it is an
exposition of the manner in which religion exploits superstition for its own ends.
