MANIFESTOS for the Twenty-First Century

Freedom of expression is of ever-increasing importance. The first four Manifestos present distinguished writers on the issue of censorship in the modern world - a complex and fragile world where widely differing cultural habits and beliefs exist in close proximity, where offence is easily taken, and where words, images and behaviour are coming under the closest scrutiny. Philosophical, meditative and critical in turn, these books will surprise, clarify and provoke in equal measure. The Manifestos is a Seagull Series created in collaboration with Index on Censorship, a home and a voice for freedom of expression since it was founded in 1972.
Manifestos plans to be an ongoing series with forthcoming essays on The Web, Privacy, Torture, Climate, Race, Democracy and War by authors such as Stan Cohen, Conor Gearty, Adam Phillips, Moris Farhi, Simon Davies, Gus Hosein, Catherine Merridale, Joanna Bourke, Patricia Williams, Nick Fraser and Stuart Hall.
